Consistency is the key to fluency, but why is that so? Learning a language is a gradual process that requires practice and repetition in order for our brains to rewire themselves and learn new patterns. Simply studying one day a week for three hours is not enough, because in the days in between, you are not creating those connections in your brain and you will need to start all over again. It is much better to study for a short period of time every day than one or two long sessions a week.
Consistency is also what creates habits. When you consistently practice something, you start to create a habit. The more consistent you are with a certain pattern or habit, the more your brain will learn to recognize it and eventually you will be able to anticipate what is coming. This happens with anything you do consistently: if you play a musical instrument, the more you practice, the more your fingers will learn how to play a melody without you having to think about each note. If you do any sport, you will notice that when you consistently practice a movement or gesture, your body will eventually learn how to do it effortlessly. It’s the same with a language. How to achieve fluency with consistent practice Now that we have established that consistency is the best way to achieve fluency, the question is how do we do it?
For starters, it’s much better to speak and write as much as possible than just listen or read. Speaking and writing are skills that you need to develop when you want to achieve fluency and listening and reading alone will not help you develop them as much as actually practicing speaking and writing will. Another important thing to keep in mind is that you need to challenge yourself. If you don’t feel like you are struggling sometimes to express yourself, it’s probably because you are not pushing yourself hard enough. It’s normal to feel like you want to give up sometimes, but that’s all part of the process. The more you practice speaking and writing consistently, the more your brain will get used to it and the easier it will become.
Another way to achieve fluency consistently is to eliminate the feeling of pressure. If you consistently practice a language, it will stop feeling like a test and the start feeling like something normal that you do every day. You will get used to using set phrases and your pronunciation will improve dramatically, because you will get used to using the sounds of that language. You will also feel less pressure to translate everything in your head, because it will stop feeling like a big deal. That’s why I always recommend my students to practice a little bit every day and to stop pressuring themselves so much. In the long run, this approach will make a huge difference.
How to consistently practice a language There are many ways you can consistently practice a language and achieve fluency. Here are a few ideas: Write journal entries in the language you are trying to learn Read for 15 minutes a day Practice speaking for 15 minutes a day Listen to music and watch TV series and movies Do language exchanges with other people There are many things you can do to consistently practice a language. You just need to choose one or two things you enjoy and do them every day without fail. Remember that the most important thing is to be consistent, so don’t worry too much about what you do, just make sure you do it every day.
